this: GM: 8½ SIM: 7 IM: 6 The impressive figure of Grandmaster of Chess
of Miguel Najdorf doesn't need a presentation. His first places in traditional
Mar del Plata tournaments in 1942, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1959, 1961, 1965,
1967, 1968, 1969 or second places in 1941 (behind Stahlberg), 1943 (behind
Stahlberg), 1953 (behind Reshevsky), 1954 (behind Panno), 1955 (behind Ivkov),
1956 (behind Keres), his extraordinary performance in Zurich 1953 or Buenos
Aires 1970, behind Fischer, Tukmakov and Panno, but ahead of Reshevsky,
Georghiu, Smyslov, Mecking, etc…, or Buenos Aires 1979, a second place behind
Larsen, but in front of Ivkov, Spassky, Georghiu, Quinteros, Petrosian, Panno,
etc…, or Buenos Aires 1980, behind Larsen, Timman, Ljubojevic and Andersson,
but ahead of Quinteros, Karpov, Balashov, Olaffson, etc…, to quote no more,
speak by themselves. I think that his best performances were his
first place in Amsterdam 1950, ahead of Reshevsky, Stahlberg, Pirc, Gligoric,
Euwe, Pilnik, Rossolimo, Trifunovic, O'Kelly, Tartakower, Donner, etc… and his
first place in Memorial Capablanca 1962, in front of Spassky, Polugaevsky,
Gligoric, Smyslov, Ivkov, Pietzsch, Haag, Ciocaltea, Guimard, Pachman, etc… He had a marvellous memory. I personally saw
him reading an article in a newspaper and some minutes after this, reproducing
it literally. This must be an important help when you play 45 blindfold
simultaneous games (Sao Paulo 1947). As all great players, he had a "complete
style", but he prefered combinational play and kept it alive until his
last days. Eight times Argentine Champion, he was
principal impulsor of chess in this country, that assumed of his own in 1939,
when decided to live in it, avoiding unrational barbarity that was destroying
Europe in those days. What more can I say from him? Only that it was a honour to have shared a
little part of his admirable life and now is also a honour to direct a
tournament in his memory. I wish all of you good luck and many
interesting games. Kind Regards Jorge Rodriguez Tournament Director
